Located near Lake Lefroy in the iconic gold-producing Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia, our St Ives mine is around 80 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie and 630 kilometres east of Perth. The mine is located on the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt, which forms part of the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia. It is a highly mineralised granite-greenstone terrain with world-class deposits of gold and nickel.
St Ives has produced in-excess of 10.5 million ounces of gold, with the first major gold mining expedition commencing in the mid-1980s. The continued exploration success and drilling of the mine’s extensive greenfields project pipeline has consistently led to further discoveries and new mines.
Featuring both underground and surface mining, as well as SAG Mill and CIP technology, the site supports over 1,000 staff and contractors.
St Ives Gold Mine operates mainly on a residential basis, with employees either living in Kambalda or Kalgoorlie.
One of the most significant discoveries in the history of St Ives, and possibly that of the Western Australian goldfields community, was the discovery of an impressive high-grade deposit that was mined as an open pit and is now an underground mine. Due to the sheer size of the deposit, it was named Invincible.
Located 8km from the Lefroy Mill, the lode thickness varies from less than 1 metre to over 20 metres in the thicker portions of the orebody and has been defined for nearly 2km in strike length, 350m wide and 160m deep.
This exciting discovery saw the commencement of open pit mining in January 2015 with the Invincible Underground project commencing in November 2017.
The Drake portal being blasted, filmed by the mining team’s Go-Pro, is captured in video below. The portal went off with a ‘bang’, as did the team’s Go-Pro, which was launched and recovered from the middle of the pit the following day.
The site offers a variety of different rosters dependent on each department. For example, 5 days on, 5 nights on and 5 days off for operational employees, or 9 days on, 5 days off or 8 days on, 6 days off, or even 5 days on and 2 days off for a variety of professional and operational support employees.
